Terrible news from the Kokoda Trail

It is with great sadness that the team at Getaway Trekking (and Adventure School Treks) advise that on Friday 15 September 2017, one of our local Kokoda Trail team members, carrying equipment on behalf of a Getaway Trekking client, suffered a cardiac arrest.

Despite the best efforts of our Wilderness First Aid trained staff member and qualified medical personnel, Winterford Tauno was unable to be revived.

Getaway Trekking owner and CEO, Sue Fitcher, was present in Port Moresby from Saturday 16 September – Sunday 24 September to assist with the process of repatriation and to offer support and assistance to Winterford’s family, the Australian Trek Leader, Trek Support Staff and the Kokoda Trail trekkers following this tragedy.

Further support was offered to the Australian trekkers participating on the trek, with General Manager, David Thomas, also present in Port Moresby upon the group’s arrival back from Popondetta at the conclusion of their trek.

Our thoughts and well wishes are currently – and will remain with – Winterford’s young family throughout this devastating time.
