Walking the Aussie Camino throughout the seasons
A 160km pilgrimage over 10 days, the Aussie Camino combines coastal trails, farmland, bush and forest. As the year evolves, each season brings its own mood, light, wildlife, flora and fauna, making each trek different to the last. With such diverse landscapes and seasonal changes, finding the perfect time to trek that suits your needs is important.
Rather than leave the guesswork to you, we’ve compiled a breakdown on what to expect when you trek the Aussie Camino at different times of the year.
Late Summer (February) – Warm, wildlife encounters
On the shoulder of summer, February treks across the Camino provide long, sun-drenched days. Depending on the weather, the terrain is often dry and golden. However, the heat of the summer still lingers, so you will need strategies to keep cool. Long sleeves, hydration and early starts are vital to help escape the heat of the day.
For those who trek this time of year, the rewards are endless. Birdlife is beautifully bright with crimson rosellas and sulphur-crested cockatoos. And, due to the early starts, you stand a better chance of capturing kangaroos, wallabies and echidnas as dawn breaks.
Visually, nature ensures there’s plenty to see and admire.
Early Autumn (March & April) – Light, reflective walking
With cooler, shorter days, the weather becomes pleasantly mild, so the Aussie Camino in early Autumn is a little easier. The landscape transitions, with autumn yellows and reds, and with less hustle and bustle, the trail becomes quieter, providing the perfect backdrop for personal reflection.
The shifting of seasons and colours also creates stunning opportunities for budding photographers.
Late Autumn (May) – Crisp mornings
Summer is now a distant memory, with crisp mornings and gentle rainfall. Autumn is in full swing; birdsong quietens as the trees begin to shed their leaves.
For those seeking space, moments of solitude combined with the comfort of cooler days, late Autumn may be the perfect time to tackle the Aussie Camino.
Very Early Spring (August) – Fresh growth and renewal
After our winter break, we recommence the Aussie Camino treks in August. This time of year offers foggy and frosty mornings as Camino tries to shake off the winter chill. The first wildflowers begin to bloom. Look out for low‑lying orchids, golden wattles, and tiny groundcovers emerging.
Naturally, the cooler weather requires a few layers that can be removed as the day goes on. We find that after a cold winter, walkers are keen to get out, meet and explore. Providing a perfect opportunity to connect with your fellow pilgrims.
Spring (September & October) – The classic Camino experience
Comfortable weather, vivid colours, flourishing wildlife and a bustling trail make Spring the time to experience the ‘classic’ Aussie Camino. A busy time for the trail where you will enjoy the energy and excitement of other pilgrims taking.
Temperature-wise, it’s mild to warm, making it perfect for prolonged, unhurried walking.
Late Spring (November) – The lucky last
By the end of the year, temperatures rise, but they are not as warm as in February. The landscape is lush, and there’s plenty of wildlife, ensuring the trail hums with activity.
On the edge of summer, November brings brighter, longer days, that allow pilgrims to bask in the beauty of the Aussie Camino.
