Things you will discover when doing Everest

Known in Tibet as Chomolungma or Qomolangma, which means “Goddess Mother of the World,” Mount Everest has attracted adventurers from around the globe, offering both challenge and discovery.

Our Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lakes trek is the ideal introduction to high-altitude adventures. These journeys combine the majestic beauty of the Himalayas with the rich culture of the Sherpa people. An experience that is sure to leave you in awe—not just of nature and history but also of yourself.

From anticipation to exhilaration, resilience to triumph, the transformational journey will shape you in many ways. Here’s what you can expect, told through the experiences of past trekkers.

From Chaos to Calm

The adventure begins in Kathmandu, a bustling hub of energy, noise, and colour. From here, a pre-dawn drive to Manthali and a thrilling flight to Lukla leads you into the glorious mountains. Before you get there though, there can be a bit of chaos with the logistics of one of the most challenging airports in the world.

Trekkers often describe the anticipation and nervous energy of these early moments. As one traveller shared:

“We left our hotel in Thamel at 1.00am on Monday morning to make the drive to Manthali to catch our flight to Lukla! We had a 6.15am flight; we actually flew at 10.15am, which was lucky as the bus trip took 5 hours due to the damage to the roads caused by the floods back in September.”

The flight from Kathmandu to Lukla is notorious for being unpredictable due to the mountainous terrain and weather conditions. Flights typically leave early in the morning, as this is when weather conditions are most favourable. Given the terrain and the need to avoid afternoon turbulence and cloud cover, an early start is essential.

Despite the chaos at the start of the adventure, one traveller shares that it was:

“Absolutely worth all the effort.” – Milo November 2023

Rising (literally and emotionally) with the altitude

The strenuous climb to Namche Bazaar is a test of both physical endurance and mental grit. Seven hours of steep uphill trekking push you to your limits, but the reward is unforgettable: the bustling town of Namche is set against the backdrop of the Himalayas.

Acclimatisation days offer a chance to explore nearby viewpoints, like the Everest View Hotel, and adjust to the altitude. Yet, this stage can also be emotionally taxing as you feel the effects of thinner air.

“Day 3 – Acclimatisation Day today. Namchee Bazaar to Everest View Hotel at 3880m asl.” “Stunning views and the perfect place to acclimatize.”

The altitude can truly test physical and mental stamina. Even when challenges arise, like altitude sickness, the focus on safety ensures peace of mind.

“Sue started showing signs of altitude sickness over the last couple of days. Oxygen level monitoring by the team suggested getting down in altitude was the best option…so a chopper ride through the Himalayas was arranged.”

We ALWAYS put your safety first.

A Walk Among Giants – The Climb to Gokyo Lakes

As we ascend further, the landscape becomes even more surreal. The Gokyo Lakes, with their stunning blue-green hues, are a highlight for many trekkers. Surrounded by towering peaks, the serenity of this area provides a welcome contrast to the strenuous journey.

Gokyo Lakes

“EBC Gokyo Lakes team have arrived at Gokyo! Left Machermo under cloud this morning then within an hour the clouds lifted and the surrounding mountains appeared! We climbed some stairs and rocky paths making our way to the first of the 3 Lakes towards Gokyo. The Lakes’ stunning blues and greens and crystal clear. Arrived at our “Resort” for the next 2 nights. Feeling blessed.”

Past trekkers often reflect on the reward of staying in the peaceful “resort” amid nature’s untouched beauty after a long trek.

These moments of tranquillity remind you why you embarked on this journey, offering a sense of deep connection to nature.

“The EBC Gokyo team left Gokyo today after a significant climb yesterday up to Gokyo Ri. They walked to Thanga, our next village for the night. The weather was cool at the start of the day, and there were a few challenging areas along the glacier. However, everyone made it to the village for a restful afternoon.”

Testing your limits – the Cho La Pass and EBC

The trek takes you across the Cho La Pass, a rugged path of snow and ice that demands resilience and determination. Equipped with crampons, you’ll navigate icy trails and experience freezing temperatures.

One group shared a surprising moment:

“Crossing Cho La pass was our aim for the day and we did it. Quite congested on the pass today, but we put on our crampons, walked through the snow and crossed over! Who would have thought we would find a charging station at the top? Nepal… we are loving you!”

Reaching Everest Base Camp and the summit of Kala Patthar (5,555 metres) is an emotional high point for many trekkers. You’ll feel a profound mix of triumph, awe, and gratitude amidst the world’s tallest peaks.

“The Everest Base Camp/Gokyo team did it! It has been a tough few days for some of the team, with heights reaching 5,555 at Kala Patthar yesterday before the early morning walk to Base Camp today. The skies have been clear and the temperatures low, but everyone is now settled into the teahouse at Dingboche.”
