Adventure School Treks has supported two groups from Croydon Community School (CCS) across the Kokoda Trail. CCS offers education to students who, for various reasons, have not been able to settle into other mainstream schools. Some, though not all, have disadvantaged backgrounds; all are quite challenging. The treks have had a significant positive impact on the students that lasts to this day.
Kokoda Youth Foundation (KYF) is an Australian Not for Profit, addressing a demographic facing significant issues as they transition through adolescence into adulthood. The fundamental philosophy of the program is the Spirit of Kokoda: COURAGE, ENDURANCE, MATESHIP AND SACRIFICE.
The program draws participants from various backgrounds, from those who have already demonstrated leadership skills and a commitment to community, to others who are managing difficult and challenging life circumstances. Group management requires a significant level of empathy and sensitivity, particularly given that some volunteer KYF leaders are experiencing Kokoda for the first time.
It is one of the truths of life that personal growth never occurs inside one’s comfort zone, and it is also true that once limits are stretched, they can be again. Investing in tomorrow’s leaders is not only rewarding for us, but a logical means by which we can help shape the next generation.
Experiencing life in a rural village in Papua New Guinea (PNG), provides a glimpse into the contentment of many who have so little. From wherever the student’s starting point is – already demonstrating leadership qualities, through to disengagement and anywhere in between, this experience demonstrates options and opportunities not previously considered.
The DoE Award is a leading structured (non-formal education) youth development program, empowering all young Australians between age 14 to 25 to explore their full potential regardless of their location or circumstance.
The Award is a fully inclusive program and has no social, political, or religious affiliations.
Each young person who takes part in the Award learns a skill, improves their physical well being, volunteers in their community and experiences a team adventure in a new environment. All Participants are supported by a network of adult Award Leaders, Assessors, Supervisors, and mentors.
The Award is comprised of three levels and four sections. Participants complete all four Sections at each level in order to achieve either their Bronze, Silver or Gold Award. At Gold level, Participants also complete a Residential Project.
Duke of Ed participants will now have the opportunity to trek the Kokoda Trail with Getaway Trekking and meet many of the criteria required to successfully complete the award.
