Kokoda Anzac Day Trek: Courage, Endurance, Mateship and Sacrifice

Kokoda Anzac Day Trek

Walking in the footsteps of heroes, our 11-day Anzac Day Kokoda Trek is more than a physical challenge. Intertwining history, national identity, and resilience in every sense, the Anzac tour is a moving experience trekkers never forget.

Maybe it’s paying respects to those who fought and gave their lives during the 1942 Kokoda campaign. But maybe it’s also the experience of connecting with the land where such pivotal moments in our history unfolded.

One thing we witness time and time again though, is that Kokoda has a unique ability to forge deeper connections with fellow trekkers and locals.

Kokoda Tour - Tour

The crescendo of the trek is the dawn service at the Isurava Battlefield Memorial. There, four pillars stand proud facing towards the surrounding hills and valleys. Each of these pillars represents a specific value, and by the time trekkers reach this point, they have experienced a bit of each one.

The power of the pillars: Courage. Endurance. Mateship. Sacrifice.

During the Kokoda Trek, the four defining Anzac values come to life along the trail, with each trekker embodying these values as they make the pilgrimage to Isurava.

Courage

Steep ascents to Ioribaiwa Ridge are not for the faint-hearted but provide views that pay back in dividends. Our trekkers push through with courage to gain a unique vantage of the Owen Stanley Range.

Ioribaiwa Village - Kokoda Tour

During World War II, Ioribaiwa marked the furthest point reached by the Japanese. The Kokoda Track Memorial Walkway documents a glimpse of life at Ioribaiwa village during the war.

Endurance

Over eight days, we bond (and cry) over 96km of terrain. From balancing on tree stumps to crossing creeks to being waist-high in rivers. Nothing builds friendships and trust quite like the shared experience of aching feet and soaked clothes.

With experienced guides and the right training, you’d also be surprised how everyone takes these challenges in their stride.

It’s character building, right?!

Mateship

Working together and persevering often leads to strong bonds among trekkers. Whether you come alone, with a partner, or with friends, you’ll often leave with more than what you arrived with.

And sometimes, we may even bump into a prime minister along the way… although we’ll leave it up to you whether you want to form any bonds.

Sacrifice

Throughout the trek, we discover the stories of those who sacrificed their lives.

Containing more than 3,700 casualties, the Bomana War Cemetery highlights the sheer scale of loss. As we navigate through battlegrounds like Brigade Hill, Eora Creek Village and Isurava, trekkers reflect on the gallantry, courage and sacrifice made by all Australians.

Where past and present collide: Anzac Dawn Service on the trail

This is not just a trek. It’s a tribute.

On Anzac Day, we rise early for the official Dawn Service at the Isurava Battlefield Memorial. We pause to reflect on the lives lost.

I came here wanting to gain a small understanding of what these young soldiers went through 74 years ago and will leave with the utmost respect and admiration for all the soldiers who fought and sacrificed their lives for their mates and country.” Michael Johnson

Carried by the Spirit of the Land and Its People

Alongside the sacrifice of Australians, the trek acknowledges the vital role of the Papua New Guinean people – the descendants of the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels. Their strength, generosity, and guidance continue to this day, sharing not only their land but also their culture.
