What to expect

Group support

We start and finish the day as a group, ensuring no one is left behind. The atmosphere is supportive and friendly, with members encouraging each other. If some walk faster, we remind them to stop at turns so everyone stays together. It’s perfectly fine to move at a slower pace or take breaks. Our focus is on mutual support and enjoying the walk together.

Cultural encounters

The track winds through remote villages where you’ll have the opportunity to meet and talk with local Papua New Guinean communities. From the warmth of their hospitality to the stories they share, these moments of connection will stay with you forever.

The footsteps of heroes

Naturally, the Kokoda Trek provides a glimpse into the courage and sacrifice of Australian soldiers during the Second World War. We will visit significant sites like Brigade Hill, Imita Ridge and the Isurava Battlefield.

Guided by experienced leaders, the trek concludes at the Kokoda Arch, a powerful symbol of resilience and triumph.

FAQs

Is the Kokoda suitable for my age?

The Kokoda Trek is open to everyone, with participants often aged 50 to 80.

What training do you need for the Kokoda?

Preparing for a Kokoda trek should be a manageable process, but it requires thorough preparation. It’s important not to wait until the month before the trek to start training; aim to begin at least three months in advance. Incorporate altitude training into your regimen, and don’t limit yourself to short, regular hikes. Instead, challenge yourself with multi-day hikes to build your stamina. Take the time to get to know your body and understand your trekking style, as this will greatly enhance your experience.
Please check our Training page to join group walks organised by Getaway Trekking.

Will I have to carry everything myself?

Personal carriers can serve as an additional option for trekkers to assist with their belongings along the way. As part of our preparation, we will also advise on essentials that you need to pack and how to keep your day bag light and easy to carry.

  • “I walked Kokoda track in a Getaway group. The team of locals from Buna and Sanananda that hosted us (carried gear and cooked for us) were exceptional. So friendly, supportive and knowledgeable Fantastic scenery. Physically challenging but well worth it. 8 days walking in tropical rainforest and remote villages was so good for my brain and soul.”
