All-new Kokoda Trail Trek ‘Kokoda Loop’ introduced for 2018

Getaway Trekking is pleased to introduce a ‘newbie’ for our 2018 trek lineup! In conjunction with our most popular South > North itinerary and our recently refined North > South itinerary, potential trekkers will now have the option of the all-new Kokoda Loop Trek – 7 nights in total.

Designed as a short travel/stay option, the Loop Trek covers only a part of the Kokoda Trail in total, specifically the northern end including the section between Isurava Battlefield and Kokoda. This area has been written about extensively, most particularly in relation to the Battle for Isurava and the incredible achievements of the 39th, a Militia Battalion, and later supported by the 2/14th AIF Battalion, in holding up the Japanese for 4 critical days.

Less is known about the men of the 53rd, another Militia Battalion raised in New South Wales. By the time the 53rd made their way onto the Track, many were already very ill with malaria and other tropical diseases. With little to no training that would equip them for the fighting ahead, B & C companies were sent to reinforce the 39th Battalion, and it was only at this point that they were issued with, and trained to use, Bren Guns – a poor and belated preparation to equip them against the battle hardened Japanese army.

5.5 days in total will be spent trekking the Loop trek, with a pre and post night’s stay at the 5-star Stanley Suites Port Moresby included as a part of the package cost.

At an all-inclusive cost of AUD2545 per person (flights, insurance additional), the Loop Trek represents significant value for money when it comes to trekking in Papua New Guinea.

The Loop Trek will join the following 2018 Trail options for those interested in joining Getaway Trekking this coming trekking season;
