Take a break from the heat and enjoy the cooler climate of the Atherton Tablelands, doing some hiking during the day and enjoying sub tropical temperatures and great hospitality at night.
Just an hour and a half south of Cairns, the scenic Atherton Tablelands offers a subtropical climate, cooler than on the coast, given its 750 metre elevation. Courtesy of the regions volcanic history and tropical rains, lava and cinders erupting over 100’s of 1000’s of years ago have weathered to become a rich, red soil, perfect for the crops that have made the Tablelands one of Queensland’s most productive agricultural regions. With its creeks, rivers and stunning waterfalls, the Tablelands abound are wonderful companions to a wide range of trekking options. The intense volcanic activity over such a long period has created an undulating terrain here, providing a stunning backdrop to our trekking. This is a short break that will have you returning home recharged and rejuvenated.
Cairns
Morning transfer from Cairns to Atherton in a private bus with your fellow trekkers. During the afternoon we have the opportunity to visit Herberton Historic Village (own cost), well worth a look. Alternatively, afternoon at leisure in Atherton. We will check into our accommodation and enjoy our first dinner with the group, at which time we will discuss the next day’s departure and hold our safety briefing.
Private transfer in a 4WD to start of the trek at Herberton. We will be walking along old logging roads, through beautiful forests with a variety of flora. Enroute we will take a relaxed pace, stopping to enjoy our packed lunch. Today is lengthy, however the terrain is not difficult and we will enjoy being in nature without the distraction of day to day life.
A shorter day, however in some sections this is a steeper climb, so it will certainly get our heart started! We trek through a variety of terrains, with a small exposed section undertaken early in the day before the heat. Our climbs along this well maintained track are rewarded with beautiful views of the Atherton Tableands and, hopefully some good bird sightings. The trek concluded, we will enjoy a devonshire tea at a local restaurant, before boarding our bus and making our way back to Cairns.
